62nd LERA Annual Meeting

The theme for the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Labor and Employment Relations Association in January 3-5, 2010 will be:

”21st Century Employment Systems:
Innovation in an Era of Accelerating Change”

The first part of this theme echoes back to John Dunlop’s “Industrial Relations Systems,” but is updated to take into account the increased importance of employment systems centered on knowledge-driven work, new models for workforce representation, major shifts in pension and benefit systems, increased income inequality, increased longevity, new technology, globalization, and other relevant developments.

The second part of the theme reflects an interest in innovative institutional arrangements, as well as an awareness that innovation must take place in a context of accelerating social and technological change.  It is hoped that a sub-text for the meeting will be an unfolding dialogue around which aspects of the past 20th Century industrial relations are still important in the 21st Century and which emerging developments represent fundamentally new or transformed employment systems.

The LERA Program Committee will consider proposals for stimulating, creative, and controversial panels and workshops related to this theme and other proposals for sessions that deal with topics of current interest and the mission of LERA. Sessions will be categorized based on five areas of labor and employment relations: international and comparative industrial relations, labor economics and labor markets, unions and employee voice, industry studies and human resources, and labor management relations.
