LERA 59th Annual Meeting to be held in Chicago January 4-7, 2007 - Mark your calendar now to attend the 59th Annual Meeting of the LERA to be held at the Chicago Hilton Hotel next January. LERA President and program chair David B. Lipsky and co-chairs Iain Gold and David Lewin have announced the Program and invite LERA members, non members, students, and guests to attend. The program will feature thirty sessions and thirty-five events including: symposiums and workshops; distinguished panel and speaker plenary sessions; committee, interest section, and industry council programs and business meetings; breakfasts, luncheons, receptions; and more.
Held each year in conjunction with the Allied Social Sciences Association (ASSA), the 2007 LERA annual meeting promises something for all members. Online meeting registration, information on discounted hotel rooms, and updated program and meeting information and schedules will be mailed to all members and will be posted at the LERA website in early September. Early bird conference registration fees are $75 and $30 for students and discounted hotel rooms have been arranged beginning at $89; these special rates are only available through December 1, 2006.
Program Highlights
Distinguished Speaker and Distinguished Panel Announced - President Lipsky has announced that this year's LERA Distinguished Speaker willl be Michael Moskow of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Moskow, who took office on Sept. 1, 1994 as the eighth president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and will be the featured speaker at the Friday afternoon plenary session from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. on January 5, 2007. Moskow is also a past president of the LERA.
The LERA Distinguished Panel Session will be held on Saturday from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m.and will feature a discussion on “Hospitality Industry Labor Relations: The 2006 Hotel Workers' Rising Campaign and Prospects for the Future.” The plenary will feature Arch Stokes of Shea, Stokes & Carter, ALC; John Wilhelm, president of UNITE-HERE, Janice Fine of Rutgers University, and Steven Greenhouse from the New York Times. Richard Hurd of Cornell University will serve as moderator.
Preconference Day on January 4- Plan also to attend the Pre-conference Day events slated for Thursday January 4, 2007. The day will feature all LERA Committee meetings, the Executive Board meeting, and a number of LERA Interest Section and Industry Council meetings. Council and Section meetings offer programs, special speakers, and workshops and all interested meeting attendees are encouraged to attend the busy pre-conference events.
Ph.D. Students! are already planning their next LERA Ph.D. Consortium to be held in Chicago on Thursday, January 4, 2007. A full day of program and discussion, especially designed for Ph.D. students, is being planned. Co-conveners for the consortium are: Mary K. Hoffman and Ryan Petty of Michigan State University and John-Paul Ferguson and Ruthanne Huising of MIT. Find out how you can help plan and participate by contacting LERA Office .
