Job Summary

 

PURPOSE: Represent the Port of Seattle and partner with Port managers in establishing and maintaining productive relationships with labor unions and represented staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Negotiate labor agreements, draft contract language, and assist manager in interpreting and administering labor agreements.  Assist managers with conducting disciplinary investigations.  Partner with Port of Seattle staff and union representatives to ensure labor agreements are implemented as intended.  Represent Port in arbitration and PERC hearings.  Participate in long-term planning for and the development of labor relations strategies.  Perform research and analysis necessary to support negotiations and other labor relations activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, OTHER WORK CHARACTERISTICS:  Knowledge of labor law, arbitration principles, PERC procedures, and the local labor community.  Proven ability to exercise diplomacy, common sense, and good judgment in situations that can be volatile.  The ability to research information, analyze data and situations, and creatively solve problems.  Teamwork and customer service-oriented.  Comfort with ambiguity.  Well developed negotiation, persuasion, presentation, and verbal and written communication skills.  MS Office computer skills, including the ability to utilize Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor's degree in industrial relations, labor law, human resources, or a related field.  Five to seven years of labor relations experience, including negotiating, grievance, and arbitration activities.  A valid Washington State driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one, is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  A law degree and labor relations experience in law enforcement, or firefighting.  Familiarity with the Port of Seattle labor environment.

Environment Information

 

Will generally work in an office environment.  Must be willing to travel between muliple locations.

 

Security Requirements

 

The successful candidate must pass a Transportation Security Administration background check.  Will also be fingerprinted for a criminal history background check with the FBI.  Candidate must complete and pass the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) and Aircraft Operation Area (AOA) training courses.  Hire date will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge.

 

Weekly Standard Hours

 

Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (37.5 hours per week).
