Starting an LERA Chapter

2. Considerations Before Moving Ahead

Is the area large enough to provide a membership base from all the constituencies? labor, management, neutral, academic?

Is the area located near an existing LERA chapter? If so:

Is the area large enough to support two existing chapters without depleting the membership base of one or the other?

Is the distance/commute between the two chapters at least one hour in time and of significant distance?

If the answers to a and b are yes, the national office asks that you seek to work with the existing chapter to first

See if the existing chapter would mentor or sponsor a new group by planning one or more meetings in the new location. This would give the opportunity to try out the new location.

See if joint memberships would work for the two groups.

Work to schedule meetings that complement rather than compete with each other (evening vs. daytime; different times of the month). It is desirable to allow access and choice for the greatest number of people.
