Call for Research Volume Proposals for 2010

The LERA Editorial Committee would like to encourage members to submit research volume proposals for the 2010 LERA research volume before November 1, 2008, if possible. The Committee would especially like to receive proposals focused on (1) an overview of recent research in industrial relations and human resources, (2) work and family (or worklife) balance, (3) employer opposition to unionism, (4) service sector labor & employment issues, (5) new models of unionism, (6) globalization and labor standards, (7) diversity and the changing workforce, (8) immigration – issues for labor and management, (9) unions and politics, (10) new developments in HRM, (11) social capital and employment relations, or (12) ethical issues in employment relations and dispute resolution.  And if that list is not sufficient, any proposal related to industrial relations and human resources is also welcome!

The 2004 volume was "Theoretical Perspectives on Work and the Employment Relationship," the 2005 volume was "Ethical Issues in Human Resources and Industrial Relations," the 2006 volume was "Contemporary Issues in Labor and Employment Relations," the 2007 volume is "Employee Pensions: Problems, Policies, and Possibilities," and the 2008 volume will be "The Gloves-Off Economy: Problems and Possibilities at the Bottom of America’s Labor Market. Please see the preceding web page for a full listing of other LERA Research Volumes.

A submission normally consists of an explanation of the overall rationale of the volume, and an outline of 10–11 chapters.  A paragraph or two should describe the contents of each chapter and the proposed author(s) of the chapter.  Those submitting proposals should have received a commitment from each chapter author involved.  However it is important that chapter authors know that the book has not yet been accepted by the LERA and that the Editorial Committee normally suggests some changes in the precise chapters to be included in any proposed volume.  The proposal should also include copies of the vitas of the proposed editor(s) and authors(s).

Members considering the submission of proposals should be aware of the following approximate schedule for the 2010 volume.  All final edited materials for that volume must be into the LERA office by February 1, 2010.  In order to meet that firm and final deadline, we suggest that volume editors ask authors to send them a first draft by August 2009. That will give the editors time to make substantive editorial suggestions to each contributor. Second and final drafts should be due in August 2008.  Typically, chapters are sent into the LERA office for copyediting as they are accepted for publication in the November 2009–February 2010 period, allowing time for the editor(s) to write and submit an integrative essay summarizing the contribution of the volume by March 1. The volume will be published in the late summer/fall of 2010.

Proposals should be sent to the LERA National Office, 121 LIR Building, 504 East Armory Avenue, Champaign IL, 61820, to the attention of the Executive Director. For more information, visit the LERA website or email: LERAoffice@uiuc.edu.
