SHRM Honors Frank Schmidt with $50,000
Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award

Award Given at SHRM Annual Conference in San Diego

(Alexandria, Va., June 19, 2005)--The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today announced that Frank Schmidt, a professor at the University of Iowa, is the recipient of the 2005 Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award.

This premier award recognizes human resource (HR) researchers or professionals whose outstanding contributions advance the field. The award acknowledges significant past research accomplishments and will help fund and facilitate future contributions by an individual to human resource management.

"It is an honor and a pleasure to provide this award to Dr. Schmidt," said SHRM President and CEO Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR. "His dedication and contributions to the HR profession over the last three decades have helped to shape the direction of HR and made it the profession we recognize today."

The special research fund, named in honor of retired SHRM President and CEO Michael R. Losey, SPHR, CAE, was endowed with a $1.25 million gift in 2000. SHRM, the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and the SHRM Foundation jointly funded the endowment. Schmidt was chosen by a panel of seven experts, including representatives from SHRM, the SHRM Foundation and HRCI. The panel was chaired by Debra Cohen, Ph.D., SPHR, vice president of Knowledge Development at SHRM. Schmidt will receive $50,000 to help facilitate his future research in the field.

Schmidt, a professor of human resources research at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business, is a notable figure in the development of validity generalization methods. Schmidt has conducted many studies, including researching the correlation between employee attitudes and financial outcomes, employee job satisfaction and job performance, and work-family conflict and job satisfaction. His research contributions in the area of HR have changed HR thinking, theory and practice in multiple concentrations.

As noted in Schmidt's nomination form, submitted by his colleagues, "Frank's research has changed research conclusions and the way we think about and practice HR management in probably the majority of HR areas. He has made major contributions to fundamental issues at the heart of HR for over 35 years and continues to do so. Words insufficiently convey how strongly we recommend him for this award."

Schmidt has received much recognition for his research, including awards from the American Psychological Association, Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology and the HR division of the University of Iowa. His research spans over 25 years and includes over 150 published studies, six books and numerous other papers.

Schmidt received his B.A in Psychology from Bellarmine College and went on to obtain both his M.S and Ph.D in Industrial Psychology from Purdue University. His achievements include several fields, ranging from academic achievement to professional affiliations and services at different universities.

Frank Schmidt will be presented the distinguished Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award at SHRM's 57th Annual Conference & Exposition in San Diego, held June 19-22.
